From October 2014 to September 2015, METRO GROUP generated 265 kilograms of CO2 equivalent per square metre of selling space. This figure is down from 273 kilograms in the previous year’s period. We have thus nearly reached the target we set for 2020 of 264 kilograms of CO2 per square metre. The significant decrease in emission levels compared with 2013/14 is primarily attributable to two factors: first, measures to reduce energy consumption and decrease coolant losses, and second, the general technical and scientific developments that are reflected in the emission factors for calculating CO2 consumption equivalents. Our greenhouse gas emissions also decreased in absolute terms. Among other things, we achieved this thanks to the sale of Galeria Kaufhof in addition to the measures already mentioned. In the coming years, we intend to continue working to protect the environment and reducing our greenhouse gas emissions even further. With a view to the Paris climate talks, METRO GROUP is defining a new climate protection target and will continue its contribution to curbing climate change after 2020.

METRO GROUP will reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 20 per cent from 330 kg/m2 in 2011 to 264 kg/m2 in 2020.
